GHIT Fund Invests in Late-stage Trial for Child-friendly “Snail Fever” Medicines–One of the Most Debilitating and Widespread Parasitic Diseases in Africa

Completion of Phase 3 trial for treatment of “Snail Fever” (aka schistosomiasis) is final step before regulatory and WHO submission; GHIT also announces new investment in novel malaria vaccine and therapeutic for dengue, continued support for innovative tools to tackle malaria and neglected tropical diseases

TOKYO, March 30, 2017 /360WiseNews/ — The Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT Fund), a unique Japanese public-private partnership formed to battle infectious diseases around the globe, today announced 11 new investments totaling US$23 million* that could help deliver a range of new innovative therapies for a host of debilitating conditions.

This latest round of targeted support includes funding for a Phase 3 clinical trial testing a pediatric formulation of a drug considered the gold standard for treating schistosomiasis, a water-borne parasitic disease linked to an assortment of acute and chronic health problems. Young children are most at risk, but the existing drug is so bitter and hard to swallow that kids often go untreated, leading to serious lifelong health and learning problems.

This clinical trial is one of the most advanced partnerships invested by the GHIT Fund, an organization that combines Japan’s historic leadership in global health and innovation with groundbreaking research from across the globe. The GHIT Fund also is making new investments in two malaria vaccine candidates, while accelerating work to find new drug treatments for malaria, dengue, Chagas disease, cryptosporidiosis and leishmaniasis.

“We’re reaching an exciting phase where GHIT’s approach to partnerships and drug and vaccine development is starting to produce tangible progress towards product deployment that could eventually lead to revolutionary breakthroughs,” said BT Slingsby, MD, PhD, MPH, who is CEO of the GHIT Fund. “We knew that combining Japan’s wealth of biomedical research talent and pharmaceutical capabilities with leading infectious disease experts near and far was likely to be a winning combination, and that’s been validated by the progress we are seeing across a rich diversity of projects.”

A Snail Fever Drug That’s Easy to Swallow

Schistosomiasis, sometimes called “snail fever” because it’s found in freshwater snails, leads to both acute and chronic disease. It’s caused by parasitic worms known as blood flukes and is usually transmitted through contact with infested water. The disease is endemic in 78 developing countries and, according to the World Health Organization, more than 261 million people, including 100 million children, were infected with schistosomiasis in 2015. Some 90 percent of infections occur in Africa, where safe water is often scarce. While rarely fatal, left untreated, the disease can cause anemia, stunted growth, impaired learning ability and chronic inflammation of vital organs.

GHIT Fund’s investment of US$4.7 million, with co-funding from its partners, will support a Phase 3 clinical trial in Africa to evaluate a pediatric formulation of praziquantel (PZQ) in children aged three months to six years. Since the 1970s, the gold-standard of treatment for the disease has been a single oral dose of PZQ used to treat adults and school-aged children. But children under age five who are infected with schistosomiasis are not treated with PZQ under the current policy. And data on the treatment of these children has been sparse and insufficient to define and confirm the best dosing. In addition, the current tablets have a severe bitter taste and the large size of the existing pill makes it difficult or just impossible for small children to swallow. A smaller, more palatable pill that could be administered to children as young as three months old is being developed by the Pediatric Praziquantel Consortium, a nonprofit international public-private partnership involving Astellas Pharma Inc. (Japan), Lygature (The Netherlands), Merck KGaA (Germany), the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, Simcyp Limited (UK), Farmanguinhos (Brazil) and the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI, UK). Family Fights to Stop Hewlett Packard and Insurer From Cutting Off Healthcare that Saves Father’s Life, According to Federal Lawsuit by Jonathan Davidson Law Firm

RIVERSIDE, Calif., March 30, 2017 /360WiseNews/ — According to a lawsuit filed in the federal District Court in the Northern District of California in San Jose, the experience of one patient, Jonathan Davidson, puts a spotlight on the large companies Hewlett Packard Enterprise and United HealthCare seeking to manipulate healthcare payment systems by cutting off a patient’s life-saving care, as alleged in the lawsuit in which Mr. Davidson’s Jonathan Davidson Law Firm is representing him. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HP) plans a merger this week with another giant computer services company, Computer Sciences Corporation, which has repeatedly been charged with systematically engaging in false or fraudulent practices in its business with Medicaid, the British National Health Service and others. In the merger, 120,000 or so HP employees are set to be “spun off” into a newly created HP-CSC merger company called “DXC Technology,” with their prior HP sponsored health plan replaced by a “private exchange model” adopted for its “lower cost structure” for HP.

According to Jonathan Davidson, his case exemplifies the abuses that victimize millions of ill patients, including employees and others with company or group medical coverage, and also the public and taxpayers through inflated medical and health insurance costs. Keep Reading

Tens of Thousands of Orthodox Jews Protest Israel’s Military Draft Law

JERUSALEM, March 30, 2017 /360WiseNews/ — Tens of thousands of Orthodox Jews gathered yesterday (Tuesday) to protest Israel’s Military Draft Law, resulting in the forced enlistment of many Orthodox Jews. The protestors also decried Israel’s brutal tactics to crack down peaceful protestors.

The demonstration was organized by the Edah HaChareidis – a Rabbinic umbrella association representing hundreds of Orthodox Jewish congregations with a combined membership of over 250,000. During the protest, leading Rabbis sharply attacked Israel’s conscription policy, passed in 2014, curtailing a 60 year old policy exempting all Yeshiva students from military service. Since then, many who refused to enlist were incarcerated for weeks and even months under brutal conditions. Those who peacefully protest those policies are subject to harsh punishments as well.

For instance, a father of seven, Rabbi Binyumin Friedman was recently incarcerated for peacefully protesting the draft. He was denied bail and is now scheduled to remain detained until the completion of his trial, which can take many months.

“The Israeli Army is an irreligious entity, and it is impossible for Orthodox Jews to fully practice their religion while in the army. We cannot serve in the army; because, the Torah prohibits us to create a state before the coming of Messiah… because, the Torah prohibits us to wage war against any sovereign nation!” declared Rabbi Issac Mark, the intergovernmental liaison for the Edah HaChareidis. Interluxe and Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Have Partnered to Sell One-Of-A-Kind Estate

CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 29, 2017 /360WiseNews/ — Offering luxury properties through online auction has proven to be successful for both buyer and seller.  Interluxe continues to represent the highest level of real estate in the country and this property is no exception. Interluxe, in partnership with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, California Properties, is auctioning an estate in Coronado, CA with over 160 ft. of waterfront footage and one of the largest boat slips in the Cays.  Previews begin on Thurs., April 20 and the online auction begins on Mon., April 24 at 9 a.m. EST.

Interluxe, the leading online luxury real estate marketplace, is a resource for agents, buyers and sellers.  As more and more home buyers become aware of the benefits of considering our services, they truly understand the benefit we bring to everyone.  Through an intensive marketing campaign, Interluxe is able to assist the agents by reaching buyers nationally and internationally, that might not have been aware of the property.  In addition, all buyers are offered a completely transparent bidding process, something a typical real estate transaction cannot offer.  The benefit to the seller is having a home show in a very short amount of time to only qualified bidders and a fast and easy closing process.

“Having worked in the luxury real estate auction business for over 18 years, my experience provided the benefit of seeing the market readiness for an online model,” said Stacy Kirk, director of client development for Interluxe.  “Consumers are looking for the best resource to provide them with the exact product they are searching for, all while taking the shortest amount of time.  Interluxe does just that while working with real estate agents to achieve our common goal for the seller, reach as many qualified buyers as possible and provide a streamlined and transparent process to buy the home of your dreams.”

As soon as you enter the property you are greeted by a floating glass main staircase that centers the open floorplan, that includes five en-suite bedrooms, many with gas fireplaces and balconies and an 875 square-foot master bedroom with a separate lounge area separated by an exposed fireplace.  A 4,700-bottle wine cellar, an exercise room with sauna and steam room, and a roof top deck to watch the waterfront sunsets, are just a few of many luxuries included in this private home.  In addition to the 160 feet of water frontage, a wrap-around pool with swim up bar and secluded spa only add to the outdoor experience of the home. Agreement with Spaceport Camden supports flight test of the Vector-R to further develop technology, launch vehicle design

TUCSON, Ariz., March 29, 2017 /360WiseNews/ — Vector, a micro satellite space launch company comprised of new-space and enterprise software industry veterans from SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, McDonnell Douglas, Sea Launch and VMware, today announced an agreement with Spaceport Camden to conduct a sub-orbital flight test of Vector’s full-scale launch vehicle, the Vector-R, as early as this summer. This near-term flight test in Camden County, Georgia, is part of a series of incremental launches which will enable Vector to validate technology, mature launch vehicle design and operations, and evaluate candidate launch sites for the future.

“Building on years of research, Vector is continuing to work towards the next technical milestone in our development plan,” said John Garvey, co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Vector. “Spaceport Camden’s support of Vector’s flight test will not only validate the engineering and technology behind our mission, but also propel Vector closer to an orbital capacity.”

This past Friday, the Camden County Board of Commissioners and County Administrator Steve Howard welcomed Vector to the future site of Spaceport Camden to conduct an initial set of ground operations on its full-scale Mechanical Engineering Unit (MEU) of the Vector-R rocket and the associated Transporter-Erector-Launcher (TEL). The visit was an opportunity to showcase the Vector-R launch system and concept of operations (CONOPS) to key members of the spaceport community, stimulate discussions regarding future launch operations and familiarize Vector personnel with Spaceport Camden.

“Vector is an ideal partner for Spaceport Camden,” said County Administrator and Spaceport Camden Project Lead, Steve Howard. “The small satellite market is already a $2.2 billion sector of the space economy and expected to grow to $5.3 billion over the next 5 years. Vector is a leader in this emerging market and we hope Camden County will be the home of not only Vector, but dozens of small satellite manufacturers, technology support providers, and sub-component suppliers.”
