Partnership for Safety of Children Around Firearms Launches Store it Safe Campaign

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 6, 2017 /360WiseNews/ — The Ohio Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics (Ohio AAP) has teamed up with firearm owners, pediatricians and others to create the Partnership for Safety of Children Around Firearms, and a pilot program called Store it Safe, to encourage safe storage of firearms and educate families about safety issues.

“Twenty-five percent of Ohio counties have had gun-related accidental injuries and deaths in children under 18 since 2015,” said Melissa Wervey Arnold, CEO, Ohio Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics. “It was clear we needed to address this growing issue and pull resources from other organizations to form this first-of-its-kind partnership.”

The Partnership has been founded on the belief that gun ownership is a personal choice. It will not engage in debating firearm owner rights. The Partnership includes the Buckeye Firearms Association, Black Wing Shooting Center, Kiwanis Club of Columbus and many other interested parties.

The goals of the Partnership are to:

  • Prevent firearm-related, unintentional deaths and suicides among children and teens
  • Change the approach in talking about firearm safety
  • Store it Safe and teach children safety around firearms

Kiwanis Club of Columbus has provided $10,000 to purchase gun lock boxes that will be handed out at 2 and 3-year-old well-visit check-ups in several Nationwide Children’s Hospital pediatric offices in central Ohio.

“We believe strongly in the second amendment, but we also believe in being a responsible gun owner and protecting our children,” said Gerard Valentino, co-founder, Buckeye Firearms Association. “This partnership is unique and we’re thrilled to be part of it and have all parties at the table to discuss gun safety.”

In addition,  a nearly £1 million grant to Vital Voices Global Partnership will support The Justice Institute on Gender-Based Violence, an innovative training program which aims to facilitate effective coordinated criminal justice responses to addressing violence against women in countries around the world. This donation forms part of Avon’s commitment to ending domestic violence and supporting survivors worldwide, and marks the launch of a new global Avon campaign focused on a range of issues of importance to women over the coming years.

Combating global domestic violence
As an official partner of International Women’s Day, Avon is committed to speaking out against domestic violence and supporting the #BeBoldForChange global initiative. In the UK Avon has joined forces with Refuge, the UK charity committed to a world where domestic violence is not tolerated. Together Avon and Refuge have carried out an in-depth study that looks at a recently recognised area of coercive control, particularly impacting women aged 16 – 21, and the findings will form the basis of a new campaign to shift the dial on this type of abuse.

Globally, Avon has been addressing the social issues that matter most to women for over 130 years.  The new UK research reflects wider insights gathered across other countries in which Avon is active. In Brazil, a recent study found that 42% of university students feared being the victim of violence in an academic environment. In Romania, new insights found that young adults struggle to find healthy relationship role models, and two thirds of teenagers said they had witnessed a physical or verbal violent episode between a couple.

All-New Zero-Emissions-Capable London Taxi Tested to Extremes in Arctic Circle

Under way now in the lower reaches of the Arctic Circle, the regime to check the vehicle performance in even the harshest conditions will only get more stringent over the coming weeks, with the taxi set to be cooled down in giant fridges to -49°C.

These checks seek to guarantee that the vehicle will always start, perform and enjoy class-leading electric battery powered range in the harshest of temperatures. The new range extended electric taxi will also undergo similar endurance testing in extreme heat environments before it is deemed ready for sale.

Quality Director Wolfram Liedtke explains: “Our new taxi is being developed with two key engineering principles – quality and endurance, to meet the needs of the demanding taxi duty cycle.  We soon commit the product to series production at our all-new manufacturing facility in Ansty, near Coventry.  It will be, without doubt, the highest quality and resilient product in London Taxi’s 98 year history.”

The testing programme also serves to check the quality of driver and passenger experience in extreme conditions. This means checking that cab heating and ventilation continue to perform to the highest standards – no matter how bitter or oppressive the temperature outside.

Driving experience is also checked – with the impact of grip, drivability and visibility tested to extremes.  LTC engineers can then make adjustments to ensure that passengers and drivers have the best and most comfortable experience, regardless of the conditions outside.
